I read this morning that Rush Limbaugh called Susan Fluke, the Georgetown student who testified in Congress in favor of health insurance coverage for birth control, “a slut.” He said her testimony “essentially says that she must be paid to have sex — what does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute.”
Back in 1968, when my name was Linda LeClair and I was fighting for women to not be locked in dormitories at night while men were free 24/7, I was called pretty much the same thing by William Buckley, the Rush Limbaugh of that day but with better grammar and degrees. Same politics. Same essential mission–trivialize and sexualize our work as women to achieve equality and live with dignity.
I hope that Susan Fluke is surrounded by friends and supporters and that her family is proud of her.
